Summary: Weekly news bulletin covering the establishment of pontoon ferries to transport humanitarian aid and the deployment of MALBAT. Also includes an extensive interview with Cedric Thornberry who gives a frank view of the current situation.
Description: Interview with UN employee from the Philippines who explains her interest in human rights.
Pontoon ferries are being set up across the Neretva river, north of Mostar, by SLOBAT Engineers and will be a lifeline on the route for humanitarian aid into Bosnia. The Spanish commander in charge of protecting the new crossing is still concerned that the 18th November agreement between the warring sides, allowing the free transport of humanitarian aid, will not be honoured.
MALBAT will arrive in the Split area in the coming week to be deployed in Southern Bosnia Herzegovina later on this month. Their Commander believes that the battalion’s multi ethnic and multi religious background will help them deal with the problems that they face in this area.
Profile of Cedric Thornberry, UNPROFOR Head of Civil Affairs. Highlights his involvement in negotiating the Sarajevo Airport Agreement on the 6th June 1992 that has allowed the UN airlift operation to begin. Details of his background including information about his work in the Middle East on Observer Missions. In an interview, Thornberry called the Vance Plan inspiring but said that it would not work at this time. For him, the essentials in Croatia are the security of the Serb minority and the integrity of the state. He said the defining moral problem of our time was to work out how different ethnicities, religions and races can live together peaceably in the same state. He also says that UNPROFOR has done its job to the best of its ability despite bad press coverage.
