News presenter reads the news. First item: The grape harvest was completed today at Navinska Blatu near Benkovac (both transliterations of Cyrillic subtitles), despite the fact that the vineyards are located dangerously close to the front line. Shot of the vineyards with workers out amongst the vines. The harvest had been cancelled after a worker was shot whilst at work. One woman explains what had happened (no English subtitles).
UN forces were asked to mediate a local ceasefire but before this was completed UNPROFOR deployed in the area on the 9th of October. Interview with a member of UNPROFOR explaining that they set up an Observation Point in the middle of the fields whilst CANBAT made patrols in the area. Shots of the people at work in the fields. He explains that there has been a de facto local ceasefire even though no formal agreement has been reached.
Clip of Colonel Oehring, Sector Commander of Sector South who says that UNPROFOR is trying to find places where infrastructure networks are shared and is working to get both sides to agree to keep these structures in place, and as a result, avoid military action. For instance there are Croatian cities whose water supply comes from across the Serbian border. At present they are without water but UNPROFOR hopes to persuade the Serbs to turn the water supply back on. He hopes initiatives like these will build confidence and create good habits.
Second Item: On UN DAY, September the 24th, UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali gave a message to UN member states. Clip of the address in which he explains that new requirements asked of the UN in the region cannot be expected to succeed without further support from member states. Peacekeeping must build upon basis of economic and social development. UNTV interviews Abdullah Maquib (sp?), Senior Civil Affairs Officer in Sector South, who wants to make it clear that UNPROFOR represents UN civil servants not politicians.
