Summary: Life in Maglaj, a town in central Bosnia, after the cease-fire. The town was under seige until the 20th of March, when the ceasfire allowed roads to the town to be reopened. UNPROFOR now has a base to the north of the town and is engaged in reconstruction efforts.
Description: Scenes of the city, UNPROFOR tank and soldiers out on patrol. Major Ollie Elwood, Light Dragoons says that the UN are monitoring the ceasefire between the Muslims and the Croats along the old confrontation line and preventing shells and small arms being transported into the town. Interview with residents. A girl describes life under shellfire. She says that they were unable to go outside but when UNPROFOR arrived the town became safer as the shelling stopped. Shots of UN aid convoy carrying seeds to help locals become self-sufficient food producers. Interview with young residents who says that life is different now because you can visit each other and talk about all of the things you are doing.
UNPROFOR has repaired eight classrooms in the primary school, where it is now safe enough for children to return. Major Ollie Elwood explains the repair work that has been done to enable class to run during the summer months. Interview with one family, living outside Maglaj, who say that they were able to return home once the blockade was lifted. The wife says that “we’ve started to live again”. The Maglaj Hospital is up and running but one member of staff says that there is an urgent need to update the centre’s methods and equipment.
Life in Maglaj is slowly improving but the future is still uncertain.
