Summary: Global Operations Fire Rescue Services (GOFRS) fight fires in Sarajevo.
Description: Shots of the fire station in Sarajevo, close ups on the equipment and firemen responding to a call. Interview with John Jordan, Chief of the UNFB in Sarajevo. He says that “we’re not here to fight a war, we’re here to fight fires, that’s our line”. These fireman have three bosses, Boutros Ghali, General Rose and John Jordan. He says that the Fire Brigade has managed to carry out its duty without getting drawn into the conflict and that recently they have been called to a large number of domestic fires, started due to the irregular supply of gas to the city. He explains that the Fire Service is made up of volunteers from around the world, who are mostly unpaid and on thirty day tours of duty.
Footage of a familiarisation exercise where firemen practise using hoses in a derelict building.
Footage of children visiting the fire station to watch the fireman work and drink water from the water fountain. These fire officers have also set up a walk-in clinic where they have been treating everything from cuts and bruises to strokes. Shots showing a fireman setting up an IV drip by inserting a catheter. John Jordan says that they are trying to become part of the community by including local volunteers. One volunteer from the city says that he is trying to help in any way that he can and that he enjoys playing in the Sunday football match with the firemen.
John Jordan says that it is a gratifying job. Every time they control and put out a fire they know that they are making a difference.
