Summary: How is the Federation between the Bosnian Croats and Muslims working? The divided Fojnica region offers a case study.
Description: Shots of the town and its valley. A man herds his sheep. There has been a ceasefire here since February that has left the region divided in two. The greater half is under the control of the Bosnian government army but the military presence on both sides has led many Croats and Bosniaks to leave their homes. Currently refugees are housed in temporarily abandoned houses. Norwegian People's Aid are helping to repair buildings in this region to make them at least partially habitable. They buy wood from local producers. Shots of a carpenter making a chair. Shots of roofers at work. Lack of labour and funds still prevent this housing projects reaching completion.
The buffer zone is the only strip of land where both Croats and Bosniaks are returning. Joint checkpoints set up by CANBAT are resulting in localised cooperation between the two sides. Interview with Lieutenant Mike Bosley, B Company, CANBAT 2, Kiseljak who says that over the past two months men on the two sides of the checkpoint have cooperated and conversed more openly with each other. This checkpoint has enabled people to return to their homes for short periods at a time in order to take care of them. One man says that he still plants vegetables in the land around his own house and comes back regularly to tend to them. People here are optimistic that their living conditions will improve over time, as the two sides cooperate more regularly together
