UNITED NATIONS TELEVISION (UNTV) ZAGREB COLLECTION, YUGOSLAVIA [Allocated Series Title]
Summary: The first refugees to flee the fresh fighting in the Bihac pocket were Serbs. UNTV visits the town where they sought shelter and examines how the UN is protecting the few Muslims among them.
Description: More than 2000 refugees came to this town, fleeing the area south of the Bihac pocket on the 25th of October. This was a harrowing experience for the refugees. Interview with one old woman, with her grandchild on her knee, describing how they made their way to Donji Lapac. Shots of her stacking wood and hanging up clothes. This family is relatively lucky as they found an empty house to live in.
Shot of children playing in the streets. The authorities were ready to react when this latest wave of refugees came into the town. Interview with an official (the Mayor?) who describes how refugees were put up in schools and hotels. A canteen was also set up to serve meals to the refugees, supplied by UNHCR and ICRC. Shots of canteen workers serving up food. Since the 25th of October, 3000 kilos of food has been handed out by UNHCR and ICRC. UNHCR representative says that they initially focused on handing out emergency necessities like mattresses, blankets and candles and then only later resupplied the Red Cross, who had initially distributed their own food supplies.
11 out of the 2000 refugees were Muslim and although they were initially housed with the Serb refugees, the resulting tension led to their separation. They are now being looked after at a nearby UN base. In Donji Lapac, the Serb authorities have promised that they are able to accommodate more refugees if necessary in future.
