Summary: An open letter from Friar Ivan Savić, a priest of 190 displaced people from the Lika area, who have been living at Hotel ICICI near Rijeka for the last three years.
Description: Text: 100 displaced persons from the Lika area have been living in Ičići Hotel near Rijeka for the last three years. This is an open letter from their priest, friar Ivan Savić.
The friar says that the 24th of September 1991 will always remain in the memory of the people of Lovinac, St. Roko and Ricice, in the eastern part of Lika. Shots of these people queuing for food at the hotal and eating at tables. Friar Savić explains that when they were evacuated, about 1000 people had to go on foot to Starigad. He says that this journey was very difficult for the weak, lame and the wounded; for these people, it took a long time. He says that for him, the journey was difficult because he was not able to offer help to people who were so broken. He says that when people arrived at the Ičići Hotel, they were happy to have a roof over their heads and be away from the shelling. Some were injured and were treated by doctors, others, suffering from psychological conditions received treatment over a longer period of time. Shots of people in the Ičići Hotel.
Exterior shot of the Ičići Hotel. Clothes hang to dry from the windows. Ivan Savić says that now they have been at the hotel for so long, these people can be identified as refugees by the way they stand and speak. He says that they have lost so much. Shots of women knitting. Men sit on a bench and some play bowls. He says that they are hard workers and doing nothing is hard for them, he says the “stillness is killing them”.
He says they pray that they can return home soon, that the war will stop and peace will reign. Though they have been able to accept to an extent what happened to them, there are still people that stayed behind that they have had no news from for three years. Shots of people watching television in the lounge.
He calls on the UN, the European Community and other organisations who can help, to minimise the devastation of whatever is left in their area, be that the schools, churches or clinics. He also asks the Serbian people to give them information about the people that did not leave. He asks to know where those who were killed are buried.
