Summary: How effective is the UN embargo against Serbia? What impact has it had on the overall economy and on the ordinary citizen? And how do the Serbs feel about their own blockade against Bosnian Serbs? Includes brief interview with Bo Pellnäs.
Description: Interviews on the street with residents of Belgrade. They complain of shortages of food and fuel as a result of the sanctions imposed by the international community on Serbia. Many feel that purchases and travel are restricted. The report comments on the growing importance of large outdoor markets over department stores as the place where residents are most likely to be able to find the items that are disappearing from the shelves of more established shops.
On the Yugoslavian embargo on the Bosnian Serbs, Bo Pellnäs, General Head of the ICFY (International Commission on the Former Yugoslavia) Humanitarian Mission says that with 163 monitors covering the border there have been no significant breaches of the embargo. He implies that the embargo is a necessary short term measure to persuade the Bosnian Serbs to accept the peace plan.
In Belgrade, residents disagreed with the embargo imposed by their government on other Serbs.
