Summary: An interview with outgoing UN Force Commander General Bertrand de La Presle.
Description: On the 28th Feb 1995, UN Force Commander General de LaPresle handed over to General Janvier. Roy Head interviews the general before he departs. LaPresle says that he does not regret his decision to prevent the use of force by the UN in Bihać. He says that the primary role of UNPROFOR is humanitarian. Although they are soldiers they are present to help the peace process. He agrees that soldiers do not make the best peacemakers but their expertise enables them, in comparison to Red Cross officials, to best report the military positions and equipment of the opposing sides.
LaPresle stresses that if UNPROFOR is forced to pull out of Croatia, the zone of separation would no longer exist and the heavy fighting for former UNPROFOR positions would be a major setback to the peace process. The general also assesses the relative strength of the Croatian and RSK forces. His clearest memory of the conflict is of its refugees. He remembers meeting the displaced and he hopes that these are the people UNPROFOR have helped and that the lives of the young will be better in the future than they are now.
