Summary: Residents on both sides of the Korana river, which marks the confrontation line in the Karlovac area, discuss what it is like to live in a front-line region and with the fear that fighting will resume.
Description: This programme was filmed before the latest violence between Croats and Serbs. Street scenes in Karlovac. One woman says that people in Zagreb do not fully understand the war because they have not directly experienced it; no shells have destroyed apartments in their city. Shots of war-damaged houses. Her husband explains that they have withstood heavy weapons attacks by sheltering in the cellar. His wife describes her unceasing fear. They sit on a bench overlooking the city. Her husband says that they hope the war will not start again and that the conflict can be solved by peaceful means.
UNTV drives along the Korana River that marks part of the confrontation line. Interview with a family living two kilometres from the frontline in the village of Donji Budački, in the Krnjak municipality. The father explains that they are living in somebody else’s house as his flat is in Karlovac.
Interview with a teacher. He is overseeing children dancing in the playground after school to celebrate Women’s Day. He explains that the school is only five kilometres away from the separation line. He says that if war became imminent then the school would have to close to protect the lives of the pupils.
Interview with a pig farmer who says that in the current cease-fire these farmers are able to sell their livestock and crops at the market. However, he warns that if the war starts again, then they will no longer be able to bring in their goods to be sold. If there is shelling, then he will not be able to work in the field and he will not produce anything.
Across river at Karlovac, a fruit and veretable market is in progress. One of the stall owners says that they try not to talk about politics and that if war began again they would have to continue with the market even if there was shelling and casualties.
