Summary: Is reconciliation possible between the conflicting sides in Croatia? How can this be achieved? UNTV talks to political leaders and ordinary people for answers.
Description: Footage of Nelson Mandela’s election victory in South Africa, an event that would have been unthinkable five years earlier. Reconciliation between Croats and Croatian Serbs seems a distant prospect and this film asks how can Croatia hasten this process.
In an interview, Vice-President of the Croatian Republic, Dr. Ivica Kostović says that Croatia has an obligation to care for all of the victims of this war. He says that it is hard for this government because it is expected to be responsible for occupied areas but, without access to them, it cannot ensure that the rights of all Croatian citizens are respected equally. In Knin, residents interviewed feel that they cannot yet live together because there are so many victims on both sides and the fear remains that each side will target the other in reprisal attacks.
The opening of the Zagreb – Lipovac highway, which runs from the capital all the way to the Serbian border in the east, is a sign of progress. Thorvald Stolenberg, Co-chairman of the ICFY (International Commission on Former Yugoslavia) is enthusiastic about an economic agreement that he thinks will improve day-to-day interaction between the two sides and eventually build up mutual trust. Vice-President Kostović says that the future lies in integrated infrastructure. Dr. Milorad Pupovac, President of the Serbian Independent Party says that it is important to open all communication networks within the country and the church has a role in spreading forgiveness and counselling victims. He says that the Church should help victims not only to find “technical reconciliation” but “a sort of Biblical pardon”.
Footage of Nelson Mandela and F.W. De Klerk shaking hands. Final voiceover says that miracles have happened elsewhere and statesmen remain hopeful they can occur here.
