Summary: Croat authorities have moved Croat refugees from Banja Luka into abandoned Serb homes in Vojnić. How are the people coping with their new environment? Do Croatian authorities plan to continue this policy?
Description: Refugees from Banja Luka are moving into houses in Vojnić, owned by Serbs who had had to leave the Krajina area earlier on in the war. In a series of interviews, these Croat refugees talk about adapting to their new living conditions and though they do not feel threatened they are not entirely satisfied with their circumstances. Though many of them have professional qualifications these kinds of jobs are scarce so instead they are volunteering at local centres to help incoming refugees register. They say that it is hard to get used to living in someone else’s home and they all agree that these houses rightfully belong to the Serbs that left them, as their houses in Banja Luka continue to belong to them, even in their absence.
Includes interviews with Duško Čubra, Vojnić Municipalilty Commissioner and Prof. Adalbert Rebić, Croat Government Office for Refugees Head.
At present not many Serbs have remained in Vojnić out of choice and it is doubtful that many will return. One young family explain that it was hard to stay when others were leaving but that it is difficult to know in these circumstances who makes the smartest move.
