- Title: INTERVIEW WITH ROY HEAD ON RTV BiH [Main Title]
- Film Number: UNT 885
- Other titles: UNITED NATIONS TELEVISION (UNTV) ZAGREB COLLECTION, YUGOSLAVIA [Allocated Series Title]
- Summary: Interview with Roy Head, UNTV Zagreb Managing Editor, explaining the history and purpose of the UNTV media campaign in Former Yugoslavia; first cut of item broadcast on the first day of the full UNTV programme transmissions.
- Description: The interviewer explains that RTV BiH are interviewing Roy Head, the Managing Editor of UNTV, because the television station will be broadcasting its first UNTV programme today and will then be broadcasting a new one every Friday and Wednesday. Roy Head says that he is delighted that they have finally reached an agreement with RTV BiH for broadcasts to take place every Wednesday and Friday. He explains that the ten minute programmes consist of three types of feature. The first type is the video letter. He says that as people cannot communicate easily across confrontation lines or borders, they hope to produce short films enabling these people to do just that. The second type allows people on the street to ask questions of the UN’s representatives, like Yasushi Akashi, SRSG, and General Rose and these representatives will then respond directly to those questions. The aim of this is to make the UN accountable to the people it serves. The third type will be journalistic or informational programmes from places where other crews cannot gain access. For instance, they have filmed in Maglaj and Bihać, they have accompanied an aid convoy from Metković to Tuzla and they have also filmed in Belgrade and in the Sectors in Croatia. He hopes these programmes will be interesting to everyone because they can find out what is going on in other parts of the region. Roy Head says that UNTV have reached an agreement with Studio B in Belgrade, who will be broadcasting a UNTV programme for the first time today as well and programmes will also be broadcast twice a week, as they will be on RTV BiH. He says that they are involved in ongoing conversations in Zagreb and with Radio Television Serbia. He says that although they have not yet reached agreements with as many stations as they hoped, they decided it was time to start communicating with local populations. Roy Head says that the first programme that is being broadcast today is about the town of Pakrac, in Sector West, where they filmed reconstruction taking place on both the Serbian and Croatian side. The programme will also include a video letter from Timka a refugee, writing to her family in Sweden and questions from people in Mostar, Zagreb and Belgrade with answers from Yasushi Akashi. Roy Head explains that UNTV was established two years ago but only operated on a small scale before Mr. Akashi became involved in January. Mr Akashi wanted to scale up UNTV’s operations and since April this year, an international team of producers has been gathered in Zagreb to start up a large television operation. This team is made up of people from many different countries including America, the United States, Ireland, Czechoslovakia, Britain and South Africa. He said that many people were interested in working for UNTV and that they believe useful work can be done here. He adds that they are UN employees, initially on a six month contract but that they hope to stay longer. They will be working full time as UN staff members.
