Summary: Mr. Boutros Boutros-Ghali delivers his message for United Nations Day, 24th of October 1994.
Description: Mr. Boutros Boutros-Ghali says that UN Day is universally recognised as a time to celebrate and to reflect on the world today. He stresses the importance of multilateral efforts in a globalised world to promote peace, development and democracy. He says that the United Nations called on the peoples and governments of the world to take centre stage in development. In 1995, Copenhagen will host the social development conference and Beijing will host a conference exploring the role of women specifically in development programmes.
He says that as they approach the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, he thinks it apt to recall the opening words of the UN Charter: ‘We, the peoples of the UN, we all of us are the UN. The UN is now, and increasingly will be, what we choose to make it.’ He calls on the ‘active commitment of people’ so that the United Nations can continue its ‘unique role’. He says ‘let this day be the starting point for taking your UN on the road to the future’.
