Summary:Infantry and armour of 159th Brigade Group head through the steep valleys and hedgerowed lanes of the 'bocage' during their advance from Le Beny-Bocage to the Sourdeval - Bas Perrier ridge.
Description:Riding in carriers and 3-ton lorries, the 3rd Monmouth Regiment passes through the villages of Romesnil and Le Reculey and receives a friendly welcome from their remaining inhabitants. A 2nd Fife and Forfar Yeomanry's Sherman tank rumbles along the Caen-Vire highway and gunners from the Monmouth's anti-tank platoon limber up their six-pounder gun to its Loyd carrier before towing it away from its position covering the main road. Infantry and armour advance in the dust and heat towards Burcy. The 1st Herefords relieves its sister regiment in an orchard near La Bistiere (?) and advances across fields and through hedgerows. 3rd Monmouth troops examine an abandoned 9th SS Panzer Division "Schwimmwagen" during their progress to the Burcy-Presles ridge. At Burcy, villagers offer the thirsty Monmouths cider and Calvados. The battalion reaches Sourdeval and quarters in its orchards; an ambulance returns to the Regimental Aid Post with several wounded. Nearby, tanks of the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry keep watch in the event of a counter-attack by the 9th SS Panzer Division.
