- Description: I. Japanese Army advances near Canton. Japanese soldiers pass Chinese milestone, moving forward in column with mule transports and crossing pontoon bridge. Artillery opens fire. Japanese have reportedly cleared surroundings of Canton of routed Chinese forces and now attack important point of Yimg-Toh on Canton to Hong Kong railway. II. Japanese Army bombers attack Lanchou. Mitsubishi G3M2 naval bombers take off from airfield and Mitsubishi Ki-21 army bombers fly in formation (aerial and cockpit views) before releasing bombs over western city of Lanchou, causing visible explosions. III. British remove Germans from Japanese ship. 16mm film taken from on board Asama Maru shows Royal Navy cutter pulling away with twenty one German passengers, some waving goodbye, towards HMS Liverpool which has halted and searched Japanese ship not far from the Japanese coast. Japanese Foreign Minister later makes an energetic protest in Japanese before a microphone. IV. Dutch Navy keeps watch on coast. As a result of acts similar to the Asama Maru incident neutral countries are taking special measures to safeguard their security. Dutch sailors man coastal lookout posts, keeping watch with binoculars and Aldis lamp as shipping passes offshore. V. Rif nomads dance in Spanish Moroccan festival. Men and women perform together in only dance where sexes come together. VI. Students attend Berlin School of Fashion and Textiles. Despite war female students continue working to dress women in good style. Girls in classroom sketch dresses on models, then make their own creations worn by models and dummies. (End of Reel 1) VII. Radiation plant for treatment of cancer. World's largest plant for radiation treatment, built by Siemens, will be used in Hamburg hospital. Film of installation also shows how metal sheet is placed between anode and patient to control power of radiation, great force of which is demonstrated by spark when current is interrupted. VIII. Testing of Luftwaffe recruits for suitability as pilots. Medical staff check physical suitability of recruits for flying by checking eyesight after subject has been rotated in chair, by decline in legibility of handwriting of recruit inside pressure chamber and the effect of centrifugal force on the subject. Aerobatics sequence by a biplane suggests physical demands placed on fliers. IX. German sappers bridge icy river. Engineer is described as most resourceful of soldiers. Group of sappers inflate rubber dinghy by snow-covered bank of river and cross icy water in it. Men then construct pontoon bridge, afterwards tested for strength by passage of troops and vehicles across. X. German soldiers relieve observation post on Franco-German border. Small group of soldiers move through houses in snow-covered village on border to reach observation post 300 metres from French positions. Snow falls as soldiers reach street and look through binoculars and stereoscopic rangefinder towards explosion in snow. XI. Mountain troops exercise near Garmisch Partenkirchen. Gebirgsjäger with skis and sledges make their way up side of mountains through deep snow. Soldiers assemble mountain gun near summit, then practice attack commences as men in snowsuits ski rapidly downhill covered by MG 34 and shell fire.
