Summary: Visit by the King and Queen to 3rd Battalion, Irish Guards, at their Buckingham Gate barracks, London, 17th March 1916.
Description: Field Marshal Lord Kitchener arrives by car at the barracks, followed by King George V with Queen Mary, Princess Mary and the Countess of Athlone (?), and Field Marshal Viscount French with John Redmond MP (not seen clearly until the end of the film). The King inspects the guardsmen, accompanied by Kitchener, French, the Earl of Kerry (battalion commander), Colonel D J Proby (regimental district commander), Lord de Vesci (regimental adjutant) and Lieutenant-General Sir Francis Lloyd. The Queen distributes shamrocks, first to Kitchener, then to the company commanders for distribution to their men. Colonel Proby, Lord de Vesci, Lord Kerry and Major P L Reid the second-in-command receive their shamrocks in person. The King then holds an investiture for men who have performed minor acts of bravery on the Western Front: Lieutenant F L Pusch gets the DSO for action at Loos, Company Sergeant-Major T Cory gets the DCM for the same battle, as does CSM W J Holmes. Private B Dempsey gets the DCM for an action at Cuinchy and Private J Henry for bravery at Givinchy. The King delivers a speech and receives three cheers. The regimental band, and the mascot "Leitrim Lad", an Irish wolfhound, lead the men in a marchpast. It starts pouring with rain as the troops dismiss. The men pose "Company Sergeant-Major Vickers, junior", a boy of five or six in guardsman's uniform, who salutes the camera. A line of officers, including French and Lloyd, watch. The King and Queen talk with Redmond. The battalion officers pose for the camera. The King and Queen leave to the officers' cheers.
