Summary: Two sequences showing Allied activities in Normandy, June 1944.
Description: I. A Kfz 1/20 VW-Schwimmwagen Typ-166 amphibious car, captured near Cheux, from the 12th SS Panzer Division 'Hitlerjugend' by the 23rd Hussars on June 27th 1944 is examined by the AFPU in the Hussars' tank harbour at Putot-en-Bessin. The cameraman scrutinises the bath-tub shaped vehicle; inside are clearly seen the left-hand drive steering wheel, the dashboard with a diagram showing the gear changes for land and water movement, the driving controls and an MP 40 sub machine-gun lying in front of the passenger seat. The three-bladed propeller unit at the Schwimmwagen's rear is seen in its stowed and operating positions; the engine cover is opened to reveal the air-cooled 25 BHP four-cylinder engine. The corporal in charge of the car turns the ignition key, presses the start button on the dashboard and drives away; note the 11th Armoured Division's "Taurus Pursuant" insignia and the Hussars' own tactical number on the vehicle.
II. A Pipe Major from the 6th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers plays 'Blue Bonnets over the Border' to French women and children in the village of St Croix Grand Tonne during 15th (Scottish) Division's spell in reserve after "Epsom."
