Summary:
Description: I. The cameraman surveys the gently rolling countryside (consisting of arable land, farm buildings, copses and woods) lying to the north of Caen around Lebisey village and Lebisey Wood; to the left beyond the Orne river are the Schneider steelworks at Les Colombelles, an industrial suburb of Caen. Also visible are tanks from the 33rd Armoured Bridge (1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry) engaged in supporting 185th Brigade's assault on this sector, the numerous stakes planted in the fields by the Germans as an anti-glider invasion precaution and smoke created by fires caused by British artillery.
II. The cameraman surveys vehicles, tent encampments and gun positions scattered across low ridge near Periers-sur-le-Dan where the 3rd British Division's gun lines have been established. A troop of M7 Priest 105mm self-propelled guns (from the 76th Field Regiment RA) lays down a dawn barrage on the German defensive perimeter on Caen's northern outskirts. The steelworks at Les Colombelles are seen partially obscured by smoke.
