Description: Montgomery and his ADC remove their headgear as they enter St Etienne, sanctuary for the hundreds of people injured and made homeless during the prolonged struggle for Caen. Accompanied by civilians (refugees and Red Cross workers), RAF and army officers, military policemen and British and, possibly, Canadian army stills and cine cameramen, Montgomery emerges from the church and drives off in his Humber staff car. The Free French flag (the French Tricolour with the Cross of Lorraine superimposed) flies at the foot of St Etienne in the Place du Lycée. The cameraman surveys the twin spires of the Abbaye aux Hommes and its west front; trucks and lorries mostly belonging to the French Red Cross can be seen parked in the foreground.
