Summary: Navy Instructional film explaining the various forms of shock encountered by warships, and ways of insulating the ship and its equipment from forces that would otherwise cause damage.
Description: Footage of HMS Sirius (F.40), a Leander class frigate. HMS Scorpion (D.64) an obsolete destroyer, is shown being subjected to damage from shock waves, probably near the Royal Naval dockyard Rosyth, east Scotland. Footage of Portsmouth Naval docks, with Horatio Nelson's flagship, the HMS Victory in the background. The film covers all aspect of reducing damage caused by shock waves, from the perspective of designers, shipbuilders and the crew themselves. Footage includes the HMS Salisbury (F.32), an aircraft direction frigate, being built at Royal Naval dockyard Devonport , Plymouth, Devon and HMS London (D.16) a County class guided missile destroyer being tested against shock waves. Also includes slow-motion footage of the behaviour of different shock mounts under stress and different types of test rigs designed to overcome the threats.
