- Description: I. IN LIBERATED MAYMYO Scenes on the streets of the now peaceful city of Maymyo, Burma. British and Indian soldiers of the 14th Army walk down the street and examine and purchase fruit and vegetables sold by Burmese women and children at a market. Shot of local people walking down a street. Scenes show British and Indian soldiers talking to Burmese women and children. ‘Allied Soldiers are good ambassadors’. II. WAC(I)s CELEBRATE THIRD ANNIVERSARY The Women’s Auxiliary Corps of India (WACI) celebrate its third Birthday. In Bombay, Sir Henry Knight, the Acting Governor, arrives at the Oval to inspect the officers and members of the Corps, which includes contingents of the WRINs and the Air Force Wing. ‘In his address Sir Henry Knight described the WACI as “indispensable to victory over the Japanese”.’ 500 members of the Corps march past. At Karachi, Capital of Sind, Sir Hugh Dow inspects women of the WACI. Scenes show spectators watching the proceedings. At Lucknow, WACI contingents are inspected by the Area Commander. At Madras, General Wade attends the WACI Birthday parade and he is seen inspecting units. Formations of the Corps march past and the Birthday cake is cut. ‘For three years WACIs have served their country. Back in mufti they may well become a powerful factor in shaping India’s destiny.’ III. BOMBAY GOVERNOR AND MOTION PICTURE CELEBRITIES SEE INFORMATION FILMS IN THE MAKING Sir Henry Knight arrives at the Headquarters of Information Films of India and is received by the producer, Ezra Mir. He meets officers of the film units. Akbar Fazalbhoy, Claude Scott, Het Mannheim and the Indian film star, Devika Rani, are amongst the guests. Sir Henry Knight and guests move on to watch the shooting of a new Information Films of India (IFI) film. A village scene from ‘Prodigal’s Return’ is filmed, a new production, which tells the story of a village youth back from the war. The director, Krishna Gopal, is shown at work on the film. ‘Working under difficult conditions Information Films of India have achieved notable results’. Scenes after the filming show people exiting from a door with ‘Stage No. 6’ written above it and having a drinks reception outside. The Governor talks to Ezra Mir. ‘Organised during the war, Information Films of India is now an important medium for carrying the message of post-war planning to the people’. IV. WORLD MOURNS LOSS OF FRANKLIN D ROOSEVELT 32ND PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. ‘The last twelve years of President Roosevelt’s life marked a turbulent period in world history’. Scenes show Roosevelt through the years. Brief static shots of him in 1932, 1936 and 1940. Scenes show: Roosevelt and Winston Churchill meeting at sea to formulate the Atlantic Charter in August 1941, Roosevelt in Casablanca in January 1943 drawing up plans for the liberation of France and Roosevelt in Tehran in December 1943. Scenes in Quebec in 1944 where Roosevelt and Churchill meet to discuss plans for the war in the Pacific. Roosevelt is shown seated in his car speaking to Churchill who leans against the side of the car. Scenes when Roosevelt is re-nominated as Democratic Candidate for the Presidential Election. Views of crowds of people holding signs. One sign says: ‘Roosevelt and a lasting peace.’ Roosevelt accepts in a broadcast from his special train. Part of his speech is shown (actually speaking): ‘I have already indicated to you why I accept the nomination which you have offered me – In spite of my desire to retire to the quiet of private life.’ Scenes show members of the American Armed Forces on battle-lines around the world casting their votes. Four million servicemen and women voted. Scenes during the counting of the national vote. Election boards tabulate the figure and there is a shot of the ‘National Broadcasting Company Election Chart.’ In Times Square, New York, half a million people hear that Roosevelt has been re-elected for a fourth time. Views of the crowds cheering. At his family home in Hyde Park, Roosevelt is seated outside waving as he receives the congratulations of his fellow townsmen. Scenes on board an American destroyer on the way back from the Crimea Conference (Yalta Conference). Roosevelt with the King of Saudi Arabia, Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia and King Farouk of Egypt. ‘After completing his 14,000 mile trip, Roosevelt arrives at the Capital to report to Congress.’ He asks Congress to support the agreements reached at Crimea. Views of members applauding with a standing ovation. Scenes on 13th April 1945 when the U.S. Office of War Information at Bombay announces the death of Roosvevelt. Views of people standing outside reading the announcement in a window. Scenes at Delhi’s Church of the Redemption where a memorial service is held to honour Roosevelt. Views of the exterior of the building and of people entering the church and people outside. Various guest arrive and enter the church including: Sir Mohammed Usman, Sir Edward Benthall, Dr Ambedkar, Sir Jogendra Singh, General Auchinleck, Commander-in-Chief, India, Sir John Colville, Acting Viceroy of India, and Lady Colville. Allied soldiers arrive to attend the service and enter the church. Admiral Rattray, Flag Officer Commanding, Bombay and General Beard, Area Commander both arrive. Sir Henry Knight, Acting Governor, exits his car and is received by the American Consul and the Bishop of Bombay. Scenes during an open air service at Karachi. Sir Hugh Dow, Governor of Sind and high ranking American and British Officers attend the ceremony. Views show the seated congregation. They are asked to rise and they stand with their heads bowed. ‘India pays her last respects to Franklin D. Roosevelt – one of the greatest Presidents in American history.
