Description: (Reel 1) A blackboard with a diagram of the eye introduces a bored unit of soldiers having instruction about the adaptability of retina to night vision; get to know your surroundings taking note of wire, holes, gates etc; allow eyes to adapt before moving about in the dark; protagonist does not and breaks his leg; while in hospital hallucinations of a black cat appear, this becomes a motif throughout the film; shots of an anaesthetist at work, library shots of a cinema crowd smoking. (Reel 2) The corporal dies eight times on the operating table and on his release advocates the use of eye protection, is promoted to sergeant and with his expertise re: night vision takes advantage of the enemy's temporary blindness after lighting a match, to ambush them, capturing many prisoners.
