Film Number:A70 54-2
Other titles:
Summary: The bulk of work carried out by pioneer and sapper units attached to 21st Army in Normandy is taken up by road construction and repair aimed at alleviating the strain imposed on the Calvados road system by military traffic.
Description: Labourers serving with the 50th Company Pioneer Corps widen a stretch of the Colleville-sur-Orne - St Aubin-d'Arquenay road by first clearing away with pick-axes and spades a strip on one side of the existing road which is then filled with stone chippings delivered in this instance from a nearby quarry by a Dodge 3-ton tipper lorry. At the quarry, a mobile crane dumps bucket loads of chippings into Dodge tipper lorries belonging to a 1st Corps Royal Army Service Corps company while a stonecrusher chews quarry stones into a size acceptable for road construction.
