Summary: Filmed at HMS Excellent shore training establishment in Portsmouth, the film stresses the importance of gun laying and the use of tangent elevation (elevating the gun above the line of sight) in hitting a target. The use of the gun sight to adjust for different ranges is covered as is taking into account the movement of one's own ship. An Oerlikon deck gun is shown firing at a towed target while making the necessary adjustments for ship movement by spotting where the shots land. A similar nighttime exercise demonstrates how spotting is carried out using tracer rounds.
