Summary: The 20th Field Company RE maintains the only link that 44th Brigade's fragile bridgehead over the Meuse-Escaut Canal has with the rest of the 15th (Scottish) Division.
Description: Officers from the 10th Battalion Highland Light Infantry are seen arriving in the Aart bridgehead in stormboats in order to reconnoitre the ground for their battalion due to cross the canal at the end of the day; the large factory which forms the core of 44th Brigade's bridgehead dominates the north bank of the canal. Sappers in a stormboat haul themselves across the 80 yard wide Meuse-Escaut Canal to the south bank. Rope for another rope ferry is made ready and secured to a stake driven into the ground. A sapper is seen about to haul himself across the canal in a stormboat (whose bow mounts a ring through which the ferry rope is secured to both shores).
