- Description: The soldiers bring the full coaltrucks out to the surface of the mine. The coal is dumped from the trucks and horse-wagons are loaded from the dump. A traction engine runs a coal-crusher. A few soldiers lead a heavy ox-wagon along the roads. Vitalis became the first aircraft machine-gunner to win the Legion of Honour, having scored seven kills. First a portrait shot. He poses in dress uniform beside his Breguet Type 14A2 with his Lewis machine gun mounted in the gunner's cockpit. He demonstrates his ability as a marksman by using a rifle at about 20 paces to shoot the ash off a friend's cigar. Tillett calls at Chauny Town Hall, which still shows extensive damage from the German retreat of February 1917. He then goes on with his party to the Soissons area where he inspects the damage to the railway sheds and station at Saint Gobain. General Pepino Garibaldi is posed together with the Commandant Sante Garibaldi, who went to fight in France at the head of the Garibaldian Legion in 1914. French soldiers lead back to the rear areas some of the Austrian prisoners they took on 30th December in the attack on Mount Tomba, with Italian women watching by the roadside, not far from Milan. The camera surveys the Austrians as they rest, picking out various types. A final portrait shot of General Fayolle, commanding the French contingent in Italy. The troops, with their tattered battle standards, march past briskly, seen only in silhouette as they pass in review. Transport mules are unhitched from light carts, some of them carrying machine guns. The carts are then loaded into lorries. Soldiers play cards and relax in a well-built dugout. A relief unit comes down the support trench. Portrait shots of General Ferdinand Foch at a formal function, General Henri Pétain decorating a soldier with the Croix de Guerre and "le soldat français", an irised shot of a Chasseur.
