Summary: A family of ten Caennais, made refugees like thousands of others by the destruction of their homes, make do in primitive conditions in caves outside the village of Fontaine-Henri seven miles away from the city.
Description: One of the younger members of the family stands near an old grandfather clock they were able to salvage from their home. The mother and grandmother, helped by their grand-daughter, prepare a meal. The family sits down to breakfast in their cave; father pours wine into mother's glass as he would do in normal times. Later he and the son-in-law set off for work on a neighbouring farm, passing a tattered French tricolour hanging from one of the trees near the caves to which the cameraman pans in order to end on an optimistic note in an otherwise sombre setting.
