Summary:Second World War British Ministry of Information newsreel trailer emphasising the need to collect household salvage to produce essential items for the war effort.
Description:The film opens with an elderly man attempting to tie his bow tie whilst looking in a mirror. The tie snaps on his starched wing-collar and he throws it over his shoulder in disgust. The discarded tie is caught in a wicker waste bin marked "salvage" by a younger, suited, bespectacled official at the door. "Ah, naughty, naughty. Don't chuck it away, it is useful. An old tie like that will make a liner (?) inside a bomber". The official spots a discarded wing-collar in a waste bin, which then flies in to his salvage bin "make it in to maps for the Navy, charts and instructions sheets, Good Morning!". Leaving the room the official walks past a cleaner who is about to throw away an old duster "that can be made in to gun wadding or maps for tanks or bomber crews - any old string and pillow-slips and overalls, don't forget Good Morning!" The cleaner mutters "well I didn't know". The official then enters a woman's bedroom and finds a young woman seated on a bed removing a stocking. "Oh ah, lovely stockings, just the very thing - they will make lovely flock, the stuff that they pack delicate instruments in. Now if you have any old frocks, swimsuits, babies wear, just put them all in the salvage. There's a good girl... I hope" the official tips his bowler hat and leaves the room. The film concludes with the official pushing over a large laundry basket of salvaged material "Now don't forget there is nothing you can't use for turning in to something useful these days". View of a table full of essential war items produced from salvage including, webbing, uniforms, wadding, rope, maps and pouches "these were old tablecloths, underwear, ties, collars, socks, everything useful. So remember - be patriotic like me". The official adds his own clothes to the pile of salvage and walks out of the room wearing only his underwear, hat and tie and carrying an umbrella carried over his arm.
