Summary: Second of two BBC schools programmes for secondary pupils about China, dealing with the period 1949-69.
Description: This programme attempts to describe life inside communist China and to illustrate some of the country's recent problems. There is much interesting film of agricultural and industrial life and the activities of the Red Guards in the Cultural Revolution. Mao's plan to mobilise all labour, male and female, is illustrated. The commentary brings out the problems of an over-rapid advance, especially the failure of the Commune movement of the early 1960s and the chaos caused by the Red Guards 1966/7. The commentary and the footage adds up to a coherent whole that is an interesting attempt to untangle the events of a difficult period in the very recent past.
