- Description: Dawn; view from HMT Dilwara as the sun rises over the convoy bound for Singapore. A Landing Craft Infantry (Large) (LCI(L)), LCI(L) 4, comes alongside Dilwara; in the foreground a Gurkha (officer?) wearing the patch of 5th Indian Division. Looking down as troops descend a cargo net to the LCI(L). Now onboard LCI(L) 125; Dilwara with two LCI(L)s alongside, one of which is marked 117. Tilt up from LCI(L) 125’s wake to Royal Navy frigate HMS Loch Katrine (K625) on patrol astern. Men on the bridges of two LCI(L)s, apparently moored alongside each other. LCI(L) underway. Looking forward with landing craft in line astern. Landing craft underway. Pan of the convoy with Singapore skyline behind and HMS Sussex moored offshore. Landing craft heading ashore; the landing craft in front signals by Morse lamp. Aircraft passing. Entering the harbour. Local people on the quayside wave. A landing craft berthing. Local children help with the cameraman’s landing craft’s mooring line. British and Indian troops disembarking (in one shot an Indian Army cameraman (probably Captain Honawar) can be glimpsed with a Vinten camera. On the dockside a Japanese interpreter speaks to Brigadier Denholm-Young, commander 123rd Indian Brigade. Group of Japanese officers. High pan of the former Japanese local headquarters with Japanese troops standing on the pavement. A British Union flag hangs above the entrance. Street level pan of Japanese soldiers on the street. The Japanese troops sit down. A street in a commercial district, with many of the buildings flying Chinese flags and people lining the street. The crowd become excited; firecrackers explode on the wet street and are thrown from windows. No troops are seen but a photographer can be seen standing on a car marked ‘Press’. Crowd of cheering children. At a civilian internment camp; women and children at a improvised cookhouse (a board is marked ‘Menu’). A group of six ‘principal ladies’, described as ‘the mainstay of the camp’. Pan showing a wooden accommodation hut with laundry hanging out to dry; A group of children; a woman speaks to a photographer. Lady Heath, wife of Lieutenant-General Lewis Heath (III Indian Corps) at the door of her accommodation. Lady Moir, wife of Brigadier Robert Gifford Moir, the Lines of Communication chief of Malaya Command in 1942. Domestic activities; a woman using an electric iron. Lady Shenton-Thomas, wife of the pre-war Governor, on her knees sweeping with a bundle of sticks.
