- Summary:
- Description: Sextons from 'A' Troop in 13th RHA's 'G' battery are seen in action near Cheux in support of the 159th Infantry Brigade; the cameraman observes one crew in action. Two 23rd Hussars Sherman tanks - one a heavily-camouflaged command tank - return from the front in the Odon valley. Outside Le Mesnil-Patry (?), wreckage from a destroyed 'Hitlerjugend' Mark IV 'Special' lies scattered about the spot where motorised infantry from 8th Rifle Brigade's 'G' company has gone into harbour. Filming from a moving jeep, the cameraman surveys the 23rd Hussar's harbour at Putot-en-Bessin where its tanks undergo necessary repairs and maintenance after their spell in action on Hill 112. The cameraman observes the flow of traffic at a crossroads on the Caen-Bayeux road near Bretteville-l'Orgueilleuse; the two Bedford QL lorries are seen on tandem (one towing the other) are from 54th RASC Company, 43rd Wessex Division. 302nd MAC's Austin ambulances queue up to be loaded with medical stores and stretchers. Three-ton lorries from three RASC units (284th and 399th RASC Companies and a 21st Army RASC Unit) file through Bretteville with supplies for the front. Infantrymen (5th DCLI) cycle into Bretteville l'Orgueilleuse with an 8th Corps provost company jeep and CMP lorries (505th RASC Company) delivering supplies to 43rd (Wessex) Division; a Humber 15-cwt ambulance and two despatch riders head in the opposite direction. 13th RHA Sexton SPGs are seen in action. The cameraman surveys activity at an 8th Corps casualty clearing station on the Caen - Fontenay-le-Pesnel road. Two casualties - one apparently dead - are lifted out of a Humber ambulance; a mobile operating theatre can be seen in the background. Traffic heads along a one-way road system to and from the front across the Caen-Fontenay road; nearby, 31st Tank Brigade Stuarts and Churchills lie in their camouflaged harbour. Vehicles travel up to the Odon valley past an 11th Armoured Division troop and vehicle harbour. Sherman tanks (4th or 29th Armoured Brigade) are seen on the ridge above Cheux. Troops, vehicles and stores are seen dispersed throughout the tree- and hedgerow-dissected fields near Cheux. A 25-pounder gun detachment (25th Field Regiment RA) is seen in action. At its battery CP, the RA lieutenant in command stands by to give firing orders. Stuart tanks (29th Armoured Brigade) returns from the front.
