Summary:
Description: I. "Cologne's fate." Cologne lies devastated as a result of the 32,000 tons of bombs it received during the course of the war. The fact that the cathedral still stands and that the nearby bridge over the Rhine was smashed allegedly proves the accuracy of RAF bombing. A few civilians wander amidst the rubble.
II. "The storming of Iwo Jima." Map showing proximity of Iwo Jima to Japan precedes aerial and sea level views of the small island, which is pounded from the air and sea before the approach of Marines in landing craft. Japanese shells land in the water near the landing craft, and US casualties are reported to have been heavy, with 2000 dead. Film shot through a tank slit records the capture of one of the two airfields; flamethrowers are used and dramatic film shows a Japanese soldier crawling across the battlefield. A few Japanese prisoners are taken aboard a US vessel standing off-shore.
