Summary:
Description: I. "Le Havre - the end." Ground level film shows target indicators dropping in the distance before bombers drop their loads on enemy positions. Canadian and British infantry move across country behind Churchill and Crocodile tanks before entering the devastated town of Le Havre and accepting the surrender of 11,000 Germans of the "suicide garrison." Prisoners are marched off past a Croix de Lorraine flag.
II. "Out of Hitler's Europe." Hospital and repatriation ships including the 'Arundel Castle' and the Swedish liners 'Gripsholm' and 'Drottningholm', all with large "protected" signs on their hulls, lie docked in Liverpool harbour. Disembarking ex-prisoners, some of them stretcher-cases, are greeted by crowds waving from the shore, and are then addressed by Adjutant General to the Forces Lieutenant General Sir Ronald Adam: "We hope we shall have all our POWs home shortly. Germany is not going to last much longer." Soldiers from the Commonwealth then publicly record messages for their folks back home: "Thrilled and happy to be once again free citizens of the British Empire. Cheerio for now!"
