Summary:
Description: I. "The battle for Naples." Report from Italy leads up to the Allied entry into Naples after showing various other news items from the peninsula. a. First film of Prime Minister Badoglio "since he changed sides" shows him standing together with General Mason-MacFarlane. b. Former inmates of the concentration camp at Casenza (?) receive piles of rations before their departure. Many are reported to be going "to the Middle East". c. Montgomery visits Clark. d. Remainder of film suggests the Allied advance on Naples, although it contains little combat material. Italian women bandage wounded soldiers. Tanks move through Pompeii while US soldiers sightsee among the ruins (amphitheatre, temple). Bulldozers clear rubble from the streets of bombarded towns. Troops receive a very enthusiastic welcome as they enter Torre Annunziata, 14 miles south of Naples, then continue past Vesuvius, which is gently smoking, before entering Naples where another enthusiastic reception awaits them. Importance of air support in this operation is suggested by film of USAAF medium bombers flying over ships off Salerno before dropping their bombs on "enemy troop concentrations" on the mainland.
