Summary:
Description: I. "Decorations." Among people to receive decorations at Buckingham Palace are Jim Wright, the first newsreel cameraman to be decorated (MBE), and his son who is in the RAF Film Unit (DFC), as well as sailors from a gunboat flotilla who proudly display their DSMs.
II. "Western Front - Aachen and Venray." View of the ruins of Aachen after the capture of the city; a few German civilians watch their military compatriots being marched off as prisoners. In the British sector troops move up to attack before capturing Venray (Venraij).
III. "Athens celebrates." Liberation of Greece is reported to be proceeding smoothly and swiftly, as British and Greek warships approach the coast and land troops at Piraeus. Cheering crowds in the streets of Athens greet the British soldiers with flowers and placards which read "We believe in your justice", "We greet the brave English Army. E.A.M." Shortage of food and serious inflation (woman buys newspaper with two billion drachma) suggest the economic problems which beset liberated Greece. Item concludes optimistically with the return on 18 October of Premier Papandreou and his government as well as Lieutenant General Scobie (partisans and Royal Marines form guard of honour) and official ceremonies at the National War Memorial and Acropolis.
