Summary: Demonstration of equipment used by the Royal Navy to deal with pollutant spillages in Naval Base waters, shot during RNEE 85 in the marina at Whale Island, Portsmouth, watched by spectators on board HMS Kent.
Description: The large tug RMAS Bustler sprays patches of fire-dispersant foam onto the water to simulate an oil slick which will be dealt with by the Port Oil Pollution Party. Demonstration of boom system for small spillages, in which an inflatable, flexible boom (deployed and recovered by hand) is stretched between two tugs (Jane and Irene) and used to encircle the spillage and keep it contained against the side of HMS Kent. Aerial shots show the containment of the spillage. Second demonstration shows the use of a large dispersant spray set operated from RMAS Bustler; dyes in the spray show how the chemical disperses in the water to clear the spillage.
