Summary:
Description: I. "Elbow Room." "Was the big attack across the River Orne an attempt to gain elbow room or did Montgomery intend to break right through the German lines? Only the High Command really knows." This rhetorical opening is accompanied by views of Sherman tanks and US trucks moving along a road and a Crusader tank and other British vehicles crossing a bridge "pouring across the Orne into our small bridgehead." A Sherman Crab crosses the bridge. Leigh Mallory watches from the ground as the aerial and artillery assault begins, creating a large pall of smoke. British and Canadian infantry and tanks advance until "the weather let us down again and the advance was halted." A Scorpion mine-sweeping tank tumbles into a ditch. The operation to get elbow room is claimed to have been a success. Churchill arrives for his second visit to Normandy, goes to Cherbourg then to a demolished rocket-bomb site, and at Caen speaks with British troops. He crosses the Orne in his car, with Montgomery and Dempsey (not visible).
