- Description: Part 1: United News main titles. 'Arab prince reviews cadets as US naval school.' Flag being raised. The Arab royal party, including Emir Feisal (future King Feisal of Saudi Arabia) walking with group of US Navy officers at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. A parade of cadets forming. Royal party with their US Navy hosts, including the Superintendent of the Academy, Rear Admiral John Beardall. Cadets parading. March past. Part 2: 'Red Cross girls tour Egypt by camel back'. A river steamer on the River Nile approaches camera carrying women of the American Red Cross. Coming ashore. Women riding camels at the Great Pyramids of Giza. At the Sphinx. Walking on sand dunes. Part 3: 'Sicilians see Allied military government at work'. In Marsala, western Sicily, a proclamation is posted on a wall and civilians gather to read it. Close-up poster text: 'Warning - Curfew will begin at the hour of sunset...Do Not Leave the Shore'. Two British officers at an Italian police station; one carries a poster. A policeman checks the translation and then shows the officers a cupboard full of confiscated small arms. The town hall ('Municipio') of Mazara del Vallo. A small crowd gathers below a balcony where a local Catholic priest shakes hands with an American officer. Large queue of civilians including women and children. Bread dough is issued. Man eating. Older woman. Middle-aged civilian man with armband 'Civil Affairs Police'. A column of prisoners of war are marched uphill (near Palermo?) from their camp, apparently as Sicilians are separated from Italians and Germans. A junior American officer addresses men over a barbed wire fence. Close-up officer. Men being interviewed by American military policemen seated at a long bench. One man, named on the commentary sheet as Private Ampolo salutes, is handed a paper, salutes again and dashes off across a road ('Ricovero') he is embraced and kissed by his mother, after being discharged from the Italian Army. Part 4: 'De Gaulle and Giraud inspect French forces'. The two men inspect French troops on a coastal hillside at Bedeau (?) in North Africa. They visit Casablanca harbour and go aboard the incomplete battleship Jean-Bart, where they meet sailors and officers. Part 5: 'Allied armies on the road to Rome!' Animated map shows Foggia, Naples and Rome; an arrow indicates an amphibious right hook up the Adriatic sea past Foggia, a landing north of Naples, and a line snakes from Naples to Rome and is labelled the Appian Way. Self-propelled and field artillery firing. Town under fire. Sherman tanks moving up. An M10 ('Wolverine') tank destroyer drives through a town. American infantry of 5th Army march past; a street sign in the background reads 'Via Roma'. Heavy towed artillery pieces pass by. Another Wolverine passes. German prisoners of war are escorted. Destroyed German motor transport. A damaged building marked 'Battipaglia' with fast left pan to damaged street. Various further shots of damaged buildings. A medics' jeep, marked with a Red Cross, rolls slowly along with a young boy clinging to the back. An American soldier doles out bits of chocolate to clamouring children. A woman speaks with soldiers. American Army nurses with a newborn baby. A soldier holds the baby. The young mother (apparently wounded by shrapnel during the battle) and her baby. Troops on the march. Allied officers including Mark Clark meet. At a beach with a number of beached Landing Ship Tanks (LSTs) with barrage balloons overhead. Troops board an LST. An LST underway. Views from an LST at sea. A British (or Polish?) captain. Anti-aircraft gunners. LST 356 approaching the beach. LST 162 and 422 beaching; an RAF airman passes foreground. A Sherman drives ashore. Close-up tracks. Another Sherman follows. More vehicles drive ashore including jeeps, motor cycles and a Morris Quad tractor, towing a 25-pounder field gun, itself being towed by a bulldozer. End titles.
