Americans fire flamethrowers against Japanese snipers in trees; dead Japanese. Victory in Solomon Islands is reportedly now complete.
II Australian girls married to US servicemen form their own club, where those intending to settle in the USA and others wishing to stay in Australia prepare themselves for their new lives with their American husbands. America reportedly fascinates many of the young brides, some of whom look at maps while others dote on the first tangible products of their fascination, babies.
III Delegation of Russians from Stalingrad, headed by Chairman of City Council, attend ceremony in Kremlin to accept gift sent by King George VI of commemorative sword. Marshal Budenny officiates. In London at the Soviet Embassy Ambassador Gusev awards Soviet medals to Admiral of the Fleet Sir John Tovey, Field Marshal Alanbrooke and Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur Harris (not visible). Tovey expresses (live) their collective "deep appreciation of the very high honour you have conferred upon us".
IV Australian armed forces help fight bush fires which have devastated parts of Victoria, leaving four townships burnt out and twenty people dead.
V After breaching of German Gustav Line, Allied forces continue advance in Italy; British move through Castelforte, which Italian refugees quit, and French soldiers with pack mules cross mountains to turn German line. British soldiers enter the Liri Valley. Column of German prisoners is brought in and deloused; injured German soldiers are taken by jeep and stretcher for medical care.
