Summary:
Description: I. "To the shores of Sicily." First pictures of the Allied invasion of Sicily concentrate on the naval side of the operation showing the armada of transport ships, landing craft and escorting vessels at sea, sailing past the rocky island of Zembra near Cape Bon in Tunisia and crossing the Sicilian Channel. Sailors and soldiers relax during the voyage, swimming and washing their clothes on board, reading the "Guide to Sicily" and generally looking happy. Item continues in this holiday mood showing a soldier transferring by breeches-buoy from vessel to vessel and a balloon towed behind a ship being buffeted by the wind. Tension rises as the wind strengthens but by the time the armada reaches the invasion coast the sea is again calm. Night naval bombardment precedes the landings (film concentrates on Canadians coming ashore). Although enemy shore batteries open up against the ships lying off the coast, landings continue. Men coming ashore in DUKWs and wading through the shallow sea. Faces of Italian prisoners look happy, consonant with the spirit of the remainder of the report.
