Summary: The controlled sinking and raising of the submarine Scotsman at Kames Bay, Bute,is undertaken in order to train new entry salvage officers and exercise salvage personnel in the use of lifting craft.
Description: Lifting operations of the submarine are shown. The submarine is lifted by wires attached to lifting craft positioned on either side above the submarine and separated by salvage pontoons. Four-inch messenger wires are fed into position and used to place the heavier (nine-inch) lifting wires. The wires are fixed into position using Bullivant clamps. Lifting is gradual as the lifting craft are flooded, the wires tautened; the lifting craft then retain their buoyacy and the tide gradually lifts them (and the submarine. Lifting vessels LC10 and LC11 are assisted by RFA Succour and HMS Barnard. The submarine is pumped out and refloated on the final lift.
