Summary: Montgomery visits the British Army of the Rhine.
Description: Montgomery arrives by Dakota at Buchenwald airfield on 31 October 1946 and is greeted by General McCreery, Commander-in-Chief of the Rhine Army, and Air-Vice Marshal Philip Wigglesworth. After inspecting an RAF Guard of Honour on the dank autumnal airfield, Montgomery departs by car. Next morning he arrives by car at the Königshof Hotel at Bad Oeynhausen, HQ of the Rhine Army, to hold staff conferences with high-ranking officers. In the afternoon officers above the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, including Generals Roberts (7th Armoured Division) and Thomas (1 Corps), are seen arriving to hear an address by Montgomery inside the Kurtheater while their wives and children wait outside. Next morning Montgomery signs the visitors book at Buchenwald airfield, where the 2nd Wiltshires form a Guard of Honour, before taking off for the United Kingdom.
