Title:THE CONSTRUCTION OF A "CORDUROY" ROAD IN SOUTHERN HOLLAND [Allocated Title]
Film Number:A70 193-3
Other titles:
Summary: Attempts are made by the Royal Engineers to improve the poor road communications in 8th Corps' sector of 2nd Army's front near Venraij.
Description: The cameraman surveys a newly-laid 'corduroy' road consisting of logs of roughly equal length laid side by side over a cross-country road or track obliterated by heavy rainfall and incessant military traffic; sappers (possibly from a 11th Armoured Division RE unit) are seen trimming with axes the ragged ends of the logs to form a continuous straight edge. The road is seen being extended by the addition of more logs which are then nailed securely to the ground. Sand dumped onto the logs by a tipper lorry is then scattered by the spadeful over the roadway in order to provide its surface with both compactness and protection from excessive wear and tear.
