Summary:
Description: "Part One: Introduction" The film considers the case of a "nominal bomb" of 20,000 tons of TNT equivalent exploding at 1000 ft above a British city. The broad results of the three main factors, heat, radiation and blast, are shown in diagrams and on a model at distances of a quarter, three quarters and one and a half miles from ground zero. The commentary states that there would be little trouble from residual radiation.
"Part Two: Heat" The effects of the heat flash and precautions which can be taken against it are shown.
"Part Three: Radiation" The film explains the difference between immediate and residual radiation, and indicates the degree of protection needed at three quarters of a mile from the blast. The danger from residual radiation is felt to be a minor problem; the film gives information on the permissible dosage for Civil Defence workers in a damaged area.
"Part Four: Blast" Diagrams indicate the different effects of blast at varying distances on different types of building. The film points out that an air burst at 1000 ft would not cause a crater or damage underground services. The effect of blast damage on emergency access is examined.
"Part Five: Effects on Personnel" The film takes the cases of people at locations ranging from a quarter of a mile to two miles from ground zero and shows the outcome (using diagrams and film) both with and without advance warning. The main conclusion is that even close to the blast, people are likely to survive provided they have time to take cover in correctly designed shelters.
