Description: Description of the role of 79 Railway Squadron, which provides the army with a unique railway capability (one which many other NATO countries no longer has). The unit's peacetime role is to operate the army's rail-served depots in Germany, and could be used to to run a limited rail support network in times of crisis to move men, equipment and matériel. Viersen station. Extensive amount of training is required before becoming a rail operator, but first and foremost the operator is a trained soldier (illustrated by footage of woodland manoeuvres). Headquarters 79 Railway Squadron, the Royal Logistic Corps: intensive selection course and training wing, fitted with rail simulator (OO gauge models). Driving and maintenance of engines and rolling stock. Details of courses: Class 2 course deals with supervisory role, and Class 1 course deals with planning and operation of railways. Organisation of unit: administration, operating unit, SQMS (quartermaster) department and small equipment maintenance team, plus a dedicated REME workshop with its own locomotive shed and engineering facilities. Examples shown of "rerailing expertise" for derailed trains. All normal military training is also undertaken. In all, the unit can provide railway back-up for military operations and movements.
