Summary: First of two BBC schools programmes for secondary pupils about China, dealing with its history 1911-49.
Description: Brian Redhead asks "Just what are the Chinese up to? What's going on inside China?" The two programmes attempt to answer this by providing a historical background to modern China. This programme deals with all the major events 1911-49. The story of the removal of the Divine Emperor, the rise of the Nationalists under Chiang Kai-Shek, the communists under Mao Tse-Tung in Kiangsi and the long March to Shensi, the Japanese invasion, American support, the final victory of the communists is all supported by stock footage. Although the programme is very much an overview of events of nearly 40 years a real sense of the complexity of the long Struggle and Chinese affairs in the 1920s and -30s comes over well.
