Summary: Two sequences: I. A heavy mortar designed to destroy concrete fortifications is submitted to firing trials at a PWD (Petrol Warfare Department) experimental station. II. A narrow bridge carrying the A36 road is widened to allow to take heavy traffic heading for Southampton.
Description: I. Phosphorus bombs fired from an experimental self-propelled mortar burst in the air 50-100 feet above ground on a target range in a Petrol Warfare Department experimental station at Barton Stacey, Hampshire. A loader drops a 25-pound bomb into a 7.92-inch mortar mounted on an adapted Valentine tank chassis positioned a mile away from its aiming point.
II. Wiltshire County Council workmen are seen in the process of doubling the width of a bridge on the A36 Salisbury-Southampton road, thus enabling it to take military traffic.
