Film Number:MAY 343
Other titles:EASTERN FRONT PROVISIONS : soap manufacture [Translation]
Summary: Instructional film on the manufacture of soap from horse carcases.
Description: Introductory titles explain that logistical difficulties on Russian front oblige troops to rely on their surroundings for their supplies. Policy relieves pressure on the home economy and is exemplified by the Army Administration Office's recommendation of the following process of soap manufacture. Opening shots of dead horses in a village and the carving up of carcases introduces detailed description on how to manufacture soap from the fat and innards of horses. These are placed in large vats, heated with acid and salt and then cooled in moulds. Hardness of soap depends on oils used, although sunflower seed oil must be reserved for food. Block of soap is removed from mould and cut by wire and knife into small tablets before drying for two weeks. Hand soap is produced by the addition of colour and scent to the liquid mixture at a temperature of 50 degrees Celsius. Film closes with troops washing their clothes and shaving with soap.
