Title:BRITISH MOVIETONE NEWS ISSUE 694A (24 SEPTEMBER 1942) [Main Title]
Film Number:NMV 694 A
Other titles:SHELTER AT HOME [Alternative Title]
Summary: Newsreel, which is accompanied by an official film illustrating some of the instructions in the third booklet "Shelter at home", which explains how to turn a house into a "reasonably safe" shelter (see 'NOTES').
Description: A ground floor room, preferably facing the garden rather than the street, is selected as a "refuge room," then simple precautions taken: removal of glass objects, taping windows and acquisition of new government steel-tube shelter, which acts as a tea table when covered with a cloth, but can also support the weight of a collapsed ceiling or the construction of a timber framework to support the roof. Jaunty music accompanies the commentary. Film released 4 08 41.
Newsreel item I. "All quiet in Diego Suarez." Account of the British landings on Madagascar is limited to views of African troops parading and setting off through the jungle on patrol and a Highland Regiment marching through Diego Suarez and giving a display of dancing for the somewhat bemused-looking locals.
Newsreel item II. "The new Churchills." Demonstration by Churchill tanks moving across open country in close formation.
Newsreel item III. "Proof positive." Reconnaissance "before and after" photographs allegedly prove the crippling accuracy of the RAF precision bombing of German industrial targets in Occupied Europe. The recent raid on the Goodrich tyre factory in Paris is a good example: comparison of aerial photographs taken before and after the attack reveals serious damage caused by accurate bombing which is confirmed by French ground-level film of buildings ablaze.
